Community Midwives

A midwife based in the community attends the surgery once a week to help us care for our antenatal patients. She is often the same midwife who will attend the patient at home when she has delivered her baby, so coming for antenatal appointments with her is a good way for both to become familiar with each other.

Community Nurses

We have a team of district nurses attached to the surgery. They provide a nursing service in the homes of the elderly, sick and post-operative patients. We also have a Macmillan nursing service in the district which specialises in the treatment of the terminally ill and their families.
Sister Jan Firman takes responsibility for the general care of our patients over the age of 65. She assesses their physical, psychological and social wellbeing and refers the patient on to the relevant professional if she feels this is necessary. You may contact Sister Firman on 876189.

Health Visitors

There are two health visitors attached to Churchfields Surgery. They visit all families with newborn babies and young children, monitoring their growth and development and offering practical advice and support. They are also involved in the immunisation clinic where all the recommended vaccinations for children are administered.

Counsellors

We have a part-time clinical counsellor to further support people with emotional or psychological problems. Patients can only be referred after seeing the doctor.

Attached Staff

A physiotherapist provides physiotherapy for a wide range of conditions. Patients need to see the doctor first who will then make a referral to the physiotherapist, if necessary.

Chiropody is provided at the Princess of Wales Hospital. Referral to the chiropodist can only be made by a member of
the Health Care Team.

A trained dietician holds a clinic at the Princess of Wales Hospital. Simple dietary advice (eg weight loss, low cholesterol diet) is given by our practice nurses. Referrals are made after seeing the doctor.
We have a social worker attached to our practice to help with all kinds of social problems for those patients over the age of 65. Patients under this age requiring such help will be referred to the local social services office.
